Anderson Wants Locals To Have A Say On Homelessness

Kevin Anderson Brad Hazzard

Member for Tamworth Kevin Anderson is calling on local people with an interest in preventing homelessness to have their say on a new discussion paper Foundations for Change – Homelessness in NSW.

Mr Anderson said the discussion paper will help form government policy to tackle homelessness over the next decade.

“We know that with homelessness, as with many things, early intervention is key which is why this document looks at how government and non-government organisations can work together to ensure fewer people experience homelessness.

“When we think of homeless people most of us picture men sleeping rough, but it’s so much more, it’s women and children sleeping in their cars, it’s young people couch surfing and not knowing where they’ll end up next.

“The NSW Government needs the best ideas from the community so they can start to make a serious difference to the lives of some of the most vulnerable people in our community.

“This is a real opportunity for people to do more than throw a couple of dollars in a hat. Your ideas could affect real change in policy and ultimately in a person’s life.”

The Homelessness Strategy will assist in delivering other new initiatives including the NSW Domestic and Family Violence Blueprint for Reform 2016-2021 and Future Directions for Social Housing in NSW.

Consultation will take place across NSW throughout September and October 2016.
